P.R.A.C. for Life Counsellor Training Level 1 - Course Content
P.R.A.C. for Life Level I (also referred to as “Prac 1”) begins a life-changing personal journey. In this first year, we focus on your life as the curriculum, learning and applying our model to self before applying it to others. Utilizing family systems, experiential and humanistic therapies, we will explore those psychological and familial forces which govern our lives within a Transpersonal/spiritual context.
Students undertake an extensive study of Bowen’s Family Systems theory in particular, write an autobiography, and prepare a family of origin presentation. Classes are both experiential and didactic in nature, emphasizing personal integration of the material for the purpose of acquiring a higher perspective and expanding the authentic, proactive self.
In Prac 1, we examine self in relation to the following key components:
-
Family Systems Theory: General Principles
Family Systems theory is reviewed, with a focus on Bowen’s model. Thinking systemically is contrasted with traditional individually focused therapy, and Bowen’s concept of differentiation of self within the family context is explored. -
Developmental Theory and Transpersonal (Spiritual) Context
Developmental theory from infancy through adulthood, and sibling position dynamics, are overviewed and examined within a transpersonal context. -
Consciousness Studies: The Transpersonal Perspective on Self
The newly burgeoning field of transpersonal psychology is explored, with an emphasis on the philosophy of A Course in Miracles. Transpersonal theory is integrated with Systems theory. -
Mind/Body System: Psychoneuroimmunology and Somatic Approaches
Theories on the connection of psychology and physical health/disease are examined, particularly with reference to the field of psychoneuroimmunology as a scientific base for a mind/body integration. Alternative somatic approaches to psychological and emotional healing are introduced. -
Relationship Dynamics: Patterns and Postures
Relationship dynamics, and anxiety binding patterns and postures, are discussed in detail. The theoretical framework for couples counseling is outlined. -
Relationship Dynamics: Transpersonal Context/Healing Process
Relationship dynamics are examined within a transpersonal context. Healthy relationship stances are discussed in detail. -
Multigenerational Emotional Process
The process of transmission of unfinished business from one generation to the next is thoroughly examined. How to use a genogram as a clinical tool is introduced, and construction of the genogram is taught. -
Expanding the Authentic Self: The Healing Process
The process of healing and differentiating from your family of origin is discussed from both a theoretical and practical perspective. Methods of supporting this process as a helper are introduced.
